Marketplace Plans
In accordance with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, as of October 13th, 2013, individuals are now able to purchase health insurance coverage through state or federal marketplaces. These new ACA plans are guarantee issue, cover pre-existing conditions and have no medical underwriting. Individuals can apply for plans during two periods.
- Annual Open Enrollment period between November 1st and January 31st. If applying before the 15th, coverage begins the first day of the next month. If you apply after the 15th, coverage begins the first day of the second following month.
- Special Enrollment Period – If you have a qualifying life event such as marriage, birth of child, divorce, or loss of coverage, you may qualify for a special enrollment period in the Marketplace. Contact the Marketplace (www.healthcare.gov) for more details on Special Enrollment Periods.
Tax Credits or Subsidies
If your household income is less than 400% of the Federal Poverty Level, you may also qualify for tax credits or subsidies that can reduce your monthly premium and/or lower your total out of pocket costs. For a household of one, 400% of the Federal Poverty level is $47,080. See 2015 Federal Poverty Level Table.

Off Marketplace Plans for La Crosse County Residents
During the Open Enrollment Period and Special Enrollment Period, individuals are still able to purchase health insurance coverage off the Marketplace directly through insurance companies. These plans are also guarantee issue, cover pre-existing conditions and have no medical underwriting. If your income is above 400% of the Federal Poverty Level and you do not qualify for tax credits or subsidies, this may be the best option for coverage.
